The house sits on the northern slopes of Sierra Espuña Regional Park, the great green lung of the Region of Murcia: over 25,000 hectares of pine forests, ravines and peaks rising above 1,500 metres. These are the activities you can enjoy with barely any driving.
The park has a network of waymarked trails for all levels. Our recommendations:
The Vía Verde del Noroeste greenway follows the old Murcia–Caravaca railway line: almost 80 km of traffic-free track with gentle gradients, perfect for cycling or walking with children. Its nearest stretch passes by Mula, about 10 minutes from the house. For mountain lovers, Sierra Espuña is a MTB and road cycling classic — its climbs regularly feature in the Vuelta a España.
Less than 25 minutes away you'll find two freshwater swimming classics: the Salto del Usero (Bullas), a waterfall with a circular pool beneath a rock vault, and Fuente Caputa (Mula), crystal-clear rock pools. We cover them in detail in our guide to the area. Remember: arrive early in summer and take your litter home.
Pliego is home to one of the longest cave systems in the Region of Murcia: the Sima de la Higuera, popular with experienced cavers. The Sima de Santa Bárbara is also nearby, with lower technical difficulty.
The rock walls of the Leyva Valley are the best-known climbing school in the Region of Murcia, with high-quality classic and sport routes. Several local adventure tourism companies organise climbing, canyoning and orienteering days — ask us and we'll put you in touch.
Sierra Espuña is home to Europe's largest population of Barbary sheep (arruí), plus wild boar, squirrels and birds of prey such as the golden eagle and the eagle owl — get up early and you'll be rewarded. And at night, the low light pollution turns the porch of the house into an observatory: on clear nights you can see the Milky Way with the naked eye.
